He Awhi Tikanga is a team of expert knowledge keepers who encompass and nurture the activities of Toi Māori Aotearoa and ensure that the integrity of te reo Māori me ona tikanga is upheld. He Awhi Tikanga is central to the wellbeing of Toi Maori Aotearoa and the foremost forum for tikanga within the Māori creative arts sector. He Awhi Tikanga works across the spectrum of Toi Māori Aotearoa and encourages artists to focus their creativity and draw strength from the marae.
He Awhi Tikanga has a long history of providing support to national Māori art form committee projects and the delivery of wānanga on marae through the practice of karanga, whaikorero, waiata and karakia. He Awhi Tikanga plays a crucial role in the co-ordination of pan-Māori art form projects and bring great strength to the presentation of Toi Māori Aotearoa projects offshore. He Awhi Tikanga also lead he taonga tuku iho wānanga at marae throughout the country, with particular focus given to karakia tawhito.
He Awhi Tikanga is future focussed and monitors the local, national and indigenous global environment to raise issues of importance to the contemporary Māori arts movement. He Awhi Tikanga remain vigilant to the impact of change on the special nature and needs of Māori and Māori arts, drawing from tikanga to provide a steady influence and adapting tikanga to serve the needs of the time.
