Words Remain – Nga Kupu ka mau tonu
Words Remain gathers and promotes of exciting emerging Māori writers all based in Te Whanganui A Tara. A selection of five poems from five different Māori writers have been printed, black ink onto clear vinyl, and will be on display from the 12th of October until the 1st of November.
Words Remain looks to showcase the diversity of Māori writers amongst Māori. Each piece is distinctively unique to each writer, but ultimately the exhibition gives an overview of the varying viewpoints and styles occurring in contemporary Māori Poetry.
We thank our esteemed guest writers, Patricia Grace, and Briar Grace Smith for reading with us on opening night, warming up
and blessing the space.

Featured Emerging Writers
Hana Pera Aoake
Hana Pera Aoake (Ngāti Mahuta, Ngāti Raukawa) is an artist and writer trapped in Te Whanganui-a-tara. Hana is a repressed bogan with a heart of gold, currently struggling through the trauma of an MFA at Massey University Te Kunenga Ki Pūrehuroa. Hana works mostly in the Māori collective Fresh and Fruity with Mya Morrison-Middleton (Ngāi Tahu) and writes about their feelings online. 
Nicole Titihuia Hawkins
Nicole Titihuia Hawkins (Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa, Ngāti Pāhauwera) is a novice writer, avid home-baker & proud aunt. She lives in Pōneke & works at a local high school teaching English, Social Studies & tikanga Māori. In 2018 she has co-hosted Coffee with Brownies, which are open mic events for people of colour to share their work in safe spaces. Nicole has work published with Blackmail Press,Capital Magazine, The Spinoff Ātea & Overland, most of which is drawn from her unpublished poetry manuscript Heartfake. 
Tayi Tibble
Tayi was born in Wellington in 1995. She studied at Aotea College & Victoria University. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in History & Social Policy, & a Master of Arts with Distinction in Creative Writing from the International Institute of Modern Letters. She was the 2017 recipient of the Adam Foundation Prize for best manuscript. The manuscript she produced during her MA year was picked up by Victoria University Press & has been published as her first book, a poetry collection titled, Poūkahangatus. Her poetry has appeared online and in journals such as Starling, Sweet Mammalian, Landfall, The Spin Off, The Wireless, & Poetry Magazine. Aziembry Aoalani
Aziembry Aoalani is currently studying at International Institution of Modern Letters. He is part Hawaiian and New Zealand Māori.

Senior Guest Writers
Briar Grace-Smith
Briar descends from Ngāti Hau and Ngāpuhi and is an award winning writer of stage plays, short fiction and television scripts. She has also written and directed screenplays. Briar was recently made an ONZM as part of the Queen’s Birthday Awards. |
Patricia Grace
Patricia Grace descends from Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Raukawa & Te Ati Awa. Patricia is a major New Zealand novelist, short story writer & children’s writer. In 2007 she received a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to literature. |
