Initiated by Rangi Kipa, the programme aims to develop a supportive cohort of wahine Māori artists working in three-dimensions.
By focusing on small-scale forms and techniques, the teaching is widely applicable across various media and provides a strong foundation for large-scale work. Convened in October 2020 and initially meeting online, the group came together in May 2021 for a three-day wānanga hosted by Rangi, Bernard Makoare and supported by Glen Skipper and Te Rangikaiwhetu Kipa. Working with bone and high-density plastic, the group produced matau (fish hooks) and toki (adzes) forms and received tuition in aho (cordage). This exhibition includes work produced during and since the wānanga along with sculptures that introduce the practice of individual participants who came to the programme from a wide variety of backgrounds, including moko, weaving, ceramics, bronze casting, stone and wood carving. |
