Rangi Kipa
Rangi Kipa is a leader in the development of toi Māori at a local, national and international level. Rangi trained in whakairo at the Maraeroa carving school in Porirua in the early 1980s followed by tertiary study in Māori knowledge (1993) and Māori visual arts (1999). Rangi has played a central role in the rise of tā moko, taonga puoro and Taranaki whakairo and his work is highly respected and widely appreciated. In a recent interview Rangi described himself as a designer, a role that describes the way he exercises his knowledge and expertise in toi Māori to the contemporary world. Rangi is increasingly called upon to contribute Māori thinking to a variety of national and civic infrastructure projects, which involve landscape, architectural and spatial design considerations. He is noticing an increased demand and respect for the creative skills and innovative thinking of Māori artists. Rangi says that Māori artists are ideal contributors-- highly educated, insightful and articulate as their art practice offers intellectual freedoms to think through the history and impact of colonisation in this country in different ways. Rangi describes the contribution of Māori artists to these projects as a process of decolonisation, ‘working out and re-imagining what Aotearoa should have been, and can be.’ Kipa has been a long term supporter of Toi Maori, is active across a number of art forms and a regular participant in the Toi Māori Market. He describes the Market as ‘an opportunity to see the width, breadth and diversity of Māori Art’. For that reason, ‘I always come down and support the kaupapa in whatever ways I can.’ Artform committees: Tā moko, Whakairo |
