The Words in Motion tour is a tour that was developed by Toi Maori Aotearoa and was first performed in various galleries and museums in the Wellington region during September and October 2010. The aim of the tour was – and still is – to grow Māori attendance in Museums and Arts galleries, as well as allowing for greater exposure for Māori artists to a wider audience.
The need for this project has been identified through three main observations:
1. The need to increase education and knowledge amongst young Māori people of artistic and cultural resources available within the community and in New Zealand.
2. To maintain the positive working relationships between Museum and Art Galleries, and the Māori artists and Māori Art Organisations
3. To expose a variety of artistic expressions through an exciting event that is open to a wide and diverse audience.
Each performance features 3 or 4 vocally energised poets who take to the stage in an effort to promote, educate and inspire creativity in people, particularly those of Maori and Pacific descent, encouraging them to look closer at poetry and all of its different forms.
With differing energy and style, the poets bring to the performance knowledge and experience, as well as a fresh faced view of the world that enables them to create a unique performance that draws from each of their individual talent and personality.
