Tai Ahiahi///Tai Awatea Curating Contemporary Māori Art Symposium Registration
SKU:
Tai Ahiahi///Tai Awatea: Curating Contemporary Māori Art.
Over the years, there have been many exhibitions of contemporary Māori art at home and abroad, from marae-centred projects to the Venice Biennale. This symposium will explore the ways these shows have been curated and consider how they might be curated in the future. While we will address a diversity of projects, our focus will be on culturally-specific curatorial approaches, encompassing the work of specialist Māori-art curators as well as the early and ongoing work of Māori artists' collectives and agencies. Through two dimensions--Tai Ahiahi (reflections) and Tai Awatea (foreseeable directions)—the symposium will explore philosophies, politics, and pragmatics; expectations and responsibilities; ambitions and limitations. Speakers will include curators, art historians, and artists. The symposium will take place at City Gallery Wellington on September 2017.
Tai Ahiahi///Tai Awatea: Curating Contemporary Māori Art is a joint project by City Gallery Wellington, Toi Māori Aotearoa – Māori Arts New Zealand, and Art History, Museum and Heritage Studies, and Adam Art Gallery at Victoria University of Wellington. It has been organised by Garry Nicholas, Robert Leonard, Anna-Marie White, Peter Brunt, Christina Barton, Conal McCarthy, Megan Tamati-Quennell, Tamahou Temara, Chris Bryant, Aaron Lister, and Deidre Brown.
