Proficient in various disciplines, Rangi specialises in ta moko, sculpture (wood, stone, bone, corian) ethnographic taonga and has works in major collections in New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, TheNewDowse, Puke Ariki) and overseas. Recent awards include the 2006 Creative New Zealand Craft/Object Art Fellowship and the Molly Morpeth Canaday Creative Excellence Award 2004.

"I like to continuously push my own boundaries and challenge the status quo, artistic expression, artistic practise should reflect the realities of life. This means that I use all manner of materials as mediums for my artistic expression from natural organic resources to composite space age compounds. My art seeks to edify and elevate 'craft' or whatever I put my hand to, that may be ta moko, whakairo, puoro-whakatangitangi, whakakai tuku iho or other interests..."

Rangi seeks to recreate the ‘voyaging nature’ of Maori and to explore the world through his art, seeking new ideas and places to be, a continuum of our ancestors departure from Hawaiki to explore new horizons.

Upcoming exhibitions include:

  • Denver Museum of Contemporary Art inaugural exhibition (October 2007)
  • Objectspace, Auckland, New Zealand (November 2007)
