Princess ATAK
Princess ATAK is an aspiring soul and hip-hop emcee, singer and composer. Her solo performances represent a Maori feel and flow which often incorporates indigenous messages of struggle and success.
Princess ATAK aka Katerina Pihera is a proud descendant of Te Arawa, Ngapuhi and the Czech Republic.
Katerina originally featured in a local Rotorua hip-hop crew called Random Klik. She has performed alongside New Zealand artists such as Kora, Katchafire, Ladi6, Che Fu, King Kapisi, Deceptakonz as well as a number of international performers.
Princess ATAK integrates aspects of kapa haka and taonga puoro in her hip hop performances. Her kapa haka experience has included international tours, including a USA cultural exchange with Native American peoples as part of the Amokura kapa group, during which she appeared solo for part of the tour.
She took part in the Oxfam International Youth Partnership, Kaleidoscope programme in Sydney, Australia where she collaborated with Cree Nations native of Canada (CreeAizan) and Torres Strait Islander of Australia (Maupower) with the assistance of ‘Morganics’ to create an original track which focused on freedom, peace and security. This track was performed and received positively by more than 300 indigenous peoples and representatives of more than 90 countries in attendance.
In 2008, Princes ATAK was invited to perform at the 4th World Youth Congress in Quebec City, Canada where she represented Aotearoa through music and culture amongst 600 young people from 120 countries alongside other artists, activists, educationalists and journalists. There she was invited to collaborate with Quebec’s finest hip-hop acts as part of the 400 year celebrations under the umbrella of Wapikoni Indigenous Films.
She then went on to emcee the Native Roots and Rhythms Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Princess ATAK geared the crowd up for numerous famous acts including performing an opening haka to welcome New Zealand band Katchafire. She had positive reviews following this appearance in local papers and on radio. She toured a number of native schools and tribal areas of New Mexico alongside Eskimo dancers of Alaska. Her attendance at Miss Indian World of Alaska was a highlight.
She looks forward to sharing her messages of realities through her music.
