Andrea Hopkins
"Some see aspects of Maori culture and tradition as archaic. I see a
contemporary culture built on solid foundations, shining, vibrant and brilliant. I hope to emulate the philosophies of the past while continuing to be inspired by the contemporary culture."
Of Hauraki and Tainui descent, Andrea was raised in Ngapuhi and Ngati Wai. Trained at Northland Polytechnic in Whangarei, Toihoukura in Gisborne and Toimairangi in Hastings, Andrea is a practicing artist and guest arts lecturer living and painting near Whangaruru, northeast of Whangarei.
"Art has a way of speaking without words. Everyone relates to Art in a unique way. The viewer has the freedom to question, speculate, challenge, debunk and form opinion. It is up to the individual if they choose to share this out loud. You can't force Art to be something that it's not. It has its own voice to rebuff and should be consistently heard at an intuitive level. Not many things you can say that about."
