Writing their right of way: Maori Writers National Hui 2008
Established and aspiring Maori writers will gather once again during the third biennial national hui hosted by Toi Maori Aotearoa. Keynote speakers include Maori writers James George, Apirana Taylor and Katerina Mataira. They will be joined by guest songwriter Charlotte Yates and Pacific writer Professor Albert Wendt.
The Maori Writers National Hui is a series of keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops and entertainment. Events and workshops will be held at the Town Hall, Wellington, 18 – 19 October with the opening night at the National Library Auditorium on Friday 17 October starting at 6.30pm.
Tickets for 3-day registration or individual events will be available through Ticketek from 1 September 2008.
The Maori Writers National Hui is a biennial event hosted by Toi Maori Aotearoa providing opportunities for networking, up-skilling in workshops and discussion of current and relevant issues facing contemporary Maori writing through keynote speeches.
Toi Maori Aotearoa General Manager, Garry Nicholas says, "The hui is a chance for Maori writers to push their craft and to showcase some of the best literature produced to date including Te Tu a Te Toka, which recently won the Maori Language Award at the Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2008."
