Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa - Maori Weavers of New Zealand invites indigenous weavers from around the world to register interest in the upcoming "Indigenous Weavers Invitational" weaving symposium, January 2010.
Indigenous Weavers Invitational - international weaving symposium
Location: Rotorua, New Zealand
Dates: 8 - 13 January 2010
Weavers are invited to register interest in receiving information about the upcoming Indigenous Weavers Invitational - a world-gathering of experts in traditional and contemporary weaving.
This event will attract 150 weavers and international speakers to explore techniques and concepts of weaving through practical workshops and presentations.
The focus is the use of weaving as an education tool and the processes for conserving natural resources for the future. A programme of speakers and activities will be announced in January 2009.

About the symposium organisers:
- The project is the latest in a series of international and national events and activities organised by Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa - Maori Weavers of New Zealand (TRRWOA)
- TRRWOA has actively promoted Maori weaving nationally and internationally since 1983
- The stunningly successful exhibition 'Toi Maori - The Eternal Thread' toured four venues in New Zealand and four venues in the USA during 2004 - 2007
- In 2005, TRRWOA co-published 'The Eternal Thread', a book on contemporary Maori weaving with Huia Publishers
- In 2006, Christina Hurihia Wirihana, deputy chairperson of TRRWOA national weavers committee, was the successful recipient of the Toi Sgwigwialtxw Residency established between Creative New Zealand and Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington State, USA
- In 2007, Edna Pahewa, chairperson of TRRWOA national weavers committee, was a member of the official delegation to meet with dignitaries of the Niue Island Government
- In 2008, the documentary 'Whiri Toi - Creation of our minds and hands in art' was launched. The documentary film is an insider's perspective to the Maraenui Weavers National Hui 2007.
- In 2008, a new relationship was formed with the de Young museum in San Francisco. Maori weaver Kohai Grace was invited to take up an artist residency with the museum, culminating in a weekend exhibition of Maori art.
