Kia ora tatou.
Toi Maori Aotearoa is a Charitable Trust created from the need for a collective artists’ forum to foster the development of Māori arts. It is supported by Creative New Zealand through Te Waka Toi, The Maori arts board of Creative New Zealand, and is comprised of a national network of contemporary Maori artists. Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa (TRRWOA) is one of the art form teams under the umbrella of Toi Maori Aotearoa.
The other art form teams are:
- Te Atinga – Contemporary Visual Arts
- Te Uhi A Mataora – Ta Moko Arts
- Nga Waka Federation – Traditional Canoe Skills
- Puatatangi – Maori Music
- Te Hā – Contemporary Māori Writers
- Nga Pou Kaituhi Maori – Literature in Te Reo
- Te Ope O Rehua – Contemporary Performing Arts
- He Awhi Tikanga – Protocol within the Arts
- Runanga Whakairo - Carving
On many occasions TRRWOA has worked together with these other art form teams to produce exhibitions, events and hui. TRRWOA is always well supported by the other art form teams and in turn TRRWOA reciprocates their support when needed.
At the recent TRRWOA Biennial General Meeting held in Maraenui, two new members - Diana Anderson (Rotorua) and Tracey Huxford (Waikanae) - were elected to the management committee of TRRWOA. Previous Chairperson Edna Pahewa (Rotorua) was re-elected as was Whero Bailey (Taranaki). All four elected will serve a four-year term on the TRRWOA management committee and join Tina Wirihana (Rotorua) and Donna Campbell (Hamilton) who both have two years of their four-year term left. Edna Pahewa is Chairperson with Tina Wirihana in the position of Deputy Chairperson.
Toi Maori Aotearoa welcomes the two new members to the TRRWOA management team and offers support and encouragement to them both as well as continued support to Edna, Tina, Whero and Donna. We also wish to thank Roka Cameron and Atareta Beattie for their dedication to the Roopu as past committee members. Nga mihi mahana ki a korua mo ou korua mahi i roto i te kaupapa o Te Roopu Raranga Whatu.

I began weaving twenty years ago, under the watchful eye of my mentor Hereke Jenkins - who was a member of the Kapiti Weavers, based in Paraparaumu.
Over the last twelve years I have devoted my time to teaching and developing NZQA Nga Mahi a te Whare Pora unit standards and Te Wananga O Aotearoa raranga programmes, based in Levin - all of which are non-fee paying.
Presently my main role is programmes manager for Te Kokiri Raranga, Retail and Management, Light Engineering and Elementary Construction programmes. I am also the contracted NZQA National moderator in the Sub Field: Nga Mahi a Te Whare Pora and have held this position for the last four years.
When not completing the endless paper trail at work, I enjoy spending time with my family. My daughter is seven, going on twenty and my son is three.
The majority of my work is hand-woven although I do enjoy experimenting with colour and materials and at times challenge myself to get back to basics. My latest works have seen me combine skills with those of my partner Hona Morgan, (carver - Ngati Toarangatira, Ngati Raukawa, Te Atiawa) and friend Wi Taepa (uku artist - Te Atiawa).
As a newly elected member of Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa Committee, I look forward to working with Edna, Tina, Kui Whero, Donna, Diana and the team at Toi Maori Aotearoa. An exciting role which I am sure will see many challenges.
To continue the work of previous committees ensuring the kaupapa of Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa is upheld through creation, strengthening and promotion of our art form.

Like many weavers I hold a multitude of positions - wife, mother, parent helper, taxi, treasurer for Te Raranga ki Rotorua and Mareikura Mahi Tuku Iho to name a few. I reside in Rotorua.
I am also a full-time student completing year one of a two-year Masters Degree in Education, focusing on Maori indigenous knowledge and education sustainability.
Although I have been a weaver for some years, the depth of knowledge gained in weekly raranga classes with Whaea Matekino Lawless is invaluable to me.
