Te Tu a Te Toka

A new publication in te reo Maori from Te Hunga Taunaki Kaituhi Maori and Totika Publications Ltd.

Te Tu a Te Toka

Te Tu a Te Toka

Te Tu a Te Toka (2007) is a collaboration between Te Hunga Taunaki Kaituhi Maori (Maori writers committee) of Toi Maori Aotearoa and Totika Publications Ltd, edited by Piripi Walker and Huriana Raven.

Te Tu a Te Toka (The Rocks Endure), a project conceived for the new millennium, is a collection of work from senior Maori writers written in the Maori language (te reo Maori). These are voices from a generation which grew up with the language. Contributions include fiction and non-fiction: one of only two poems in Maori by Hone Tuwhare, scary stories of past events, reminiscences of a rural life that has all but vanished, and timely reflections on the changing scene in the 21st century encompassing politics, the arts and social phenomena.

Written by some of the most eminent individuals in the Maori commmunity, this book is an entertaining and important anthology. Names that will resonate for readers include Mate Kaiwai, Keri Kaa, Katerina Mataira, Wharehuia Milroy, Pou Temara, Timoti Karetu and Waihoroi and Rahera Shortland and others.

Excerpt from Professor Hirini Moko Mead’s korero ‘He Puurongo noo te manotau hou’:

“E noho ana ahau i mua i te pouaka whakaata, e whakarongo ana ki eetahi tangata e korero ana. Ko taaku mahi he titiro, he whakarongo peenei anoo i te tini me the mano.

An important new work of Maori literature published completely in te reo Maori, Te Tuu a Te Toka has a limited print run and is available for sale through Toi Maori Aotearoa.
