Press Release and Information

Media release and event description
Puatatangi presents the third annual Pao! Pao! Pao! event in Hamilton.
For the 3rd year running, the Pao! Pao! Pao! Showcase of Maori musicians and performers will come to Hamilton for an exciting line-up featuring 12 acts performing across a wide range of styles sure to suit all ages and tastes. Hot on the heels of NZ Music Month during the month of May, the musicians will present the best of Maori musical talent today.
Saturday 5 June holds a full programme for the general public as well as events specifically targeting Maori musicians. Daytime workshops starting at 9am will cover issues regarding NZ music, with a panel of representatives from the Music Industry. Later in the day there will be a forum concentrating on the upsurge in Music programming on television with representatives from Maori Television and TVNZ.
Two special launches will also take place: Pao! Pao! Pao! Live! is a new CD compilation of live recordings from the best of Pao! Pao! Pao! 2003. Te Ara Puoro Volume 3 is a new journal publication containing papers from the Te Haka a Tanerore National Conference on Haka. Both the CD and the journal will be available for sale.
The highlight of Pao! Pao! Pao! is the Showcase from 6pm , 12midnight. "This is a rare and exciting occasion to experience Maori music being performed at the highest standard" says Te Rita Papesch, Artistic Director. "We are committed to presenting well-known musicians alongside upcoming artists. What they share in common is their passion for being Maori and their passion for music."

Established by the late Hirini Melbourne as a youth-focused event for Maori to take pride in music as a form of creative expression, this year's Pao! Pao! Pao! will give younger performers the valuable experience of being billed alongside well-known artists such as Ruia Aperahama (of Ruia and Ranea, Southside of Bombay) and Whirimako Black.
Whirimako Black will perform songs from her popular albums "Shrouded in the Mist' (winner of best Maori language recording, NZ Music Awards 2001) and "Houhou Te Rongo'. During NZ Music Month in May 2004, Whirimako released the first single and video from her forthcoming album "Tangihaku.'
Also performing will be the highly-acclaimed Whitireia Performing Arts from Porirua and Kahurangi NZ Maori Dance Theatre from Hastings. Both performance groups have recently returned from international tours.
