Pao! Pao! Pao! 2003

Description of the event

Venue: WEL Academy of Performing Arts - University of Waikato, Hamilton
Dates: Friday 30 May Monday 2 June 2003

During Queen"s Birthday Weekend, 30 May 2 June 2003, Hamilton will experience a festival that will bring together a dynamic blend of Maori and Pacific music and dance performances in an explosion of colour, sound and movement.

Pao! Pao! Pao! will adopt a Maori /Pacific feel to reflect the multi-faceted cultural tapestry that represents Aotearoa"s unique performing arts base. At the same time, Pao! Pao! Pao! will highlight a first-class array of supremely talented but very different artists from Wellington, Ruatahuna, Auckland and Hamilton.

Through performances, workshops and active involvement, Pao! Pao! Pao! seeks to increase knowledge, culture, understanding and appreciation of the depth and complexity of our performing arts. Pao! Pao! Pao! will create a vibrant and exciting environment, mainly targeting a youth audience. It will provide a major national music and dance festival for Hamilton and reflect the depth and diversity of indigenous and contemporary art forms in Aotearoa.

Pao! Pao! Pao! is presented by Toi Maori Aotearoa Maori Arts NZ. Toi Maori and it"s ten Arts Committees aim to present and promote the work of Maori artists in a national context, to encourage innovation through collaboration and to create new opportunities to develop and strengthen links between Maori artists across a range of art forms.
