Glossary of terms
Here are words of components associated with waka. Various iwi will have unique names, however this is a good start.
- Hihi, Karu - ring-shaped wands projecting forward of the bow
- Ihu - front section or stern of the waka
- Kei / Tauaro - rear section stern
- Kohiwi / Tinana - body of the waka
- Koraha - floor
- Pae Matua / Tungauru - seat of navigator
- Rauawa - carved part along top of hull
- Tata / Tiheru - bailer
