Wananga for Kaihautu/Kaea July 2002
At Ruaihona Marae, Te Teko, Waka captains will come together for workshops on seamanship.
This proposal arose from the group of waka leaders who met at Waitangi earlier this year to look at ways of implementing best practices for waka throughout the country.
The training of kaihoe has in the past dominated the activities of workshops however there was clearly an interest in upskilling other sectors of the waka traditions. The research carried out for the Safety Guidelines in 2000 and 2001 highlighted the respective roles of the waka members, including kaumatua, kaiawhina, kaihoe and of course this group kaihautu.
The gathering will represent the most experienced gathering of kaihautu ever
assembled in modern times as previous hui have been led by the co-ordinators and kaumatua of waka communities.
A meeting of Nga waka federation Management Committee will coincide with the wananga. The committee will be considering a plan for future action of
advocacy and development of kaupapa waka and look at links to support networks for the continued traditions of waka.
