Te Aurere Waka Newsletter October 2006
"Ngaa Atua koe ma runga aurere mai Hawaiki raano."
Kia ora,
New Waka Tetekura.
Work has begun on the new Waka Tetekura (fishing canoe). This one is being built for the wahine (women) of Ngati Awa. This will be the first one that Hekenukumai has made out of Totara. At the end of September, Te Whanau Moana was taken down to Gisborne for the people to have a practice and lessons on paddling.
Te Aurere on ABC Television.
Some months ago we did some filming for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This has since aired on the Catalyst program. If you go to http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories you will be able to read about it. Have a look, it makes good reading.
Te Aurere Makes History.
After many months of hard work and heartache, Te Aurere has gained its Safe Ship Management. This opens the door for us to do much more with the waka than we have been able to do in the past. Te Aurere is now the only waka in New Zealand to have SSM and we are very proud of that factor. Many of the crew gave up a good many hours over their weekends and holidays to achieve this and we thank them most sincerely for all their efforts. We also thank Bill Black for all his work with the electrics.
"The World."
On Monday 23 October, Gina and Hekenukumai flew to Tauranga and boarded the luxury apartment ship "The World." On Tuesday evening, Hekenukumai gave a lecture to those on board. They stayed on the ship until it got to Auckland and flew home again on Thursday. This ship has luxury apartments which people purchase and then live on board sailing the world. What a great life! Tauranga Moana Tauranga Tangata.
The weekend of 20 October (Labour weekend) Tauranga held its annual festival. Part of this festival always involves waka and although due to commitments, Te Aurere was not able to be there this year, we were able to send Te Whanau Moana. By all reports it made a good impression taking people for paddling, rides etc. This waka is always a hit wherever it goes, perhaps due to the fact that women can get involved with it.
Te Aurere News.
Friday 27 October at 10.30pm, Te Aurere cast off from her mooring in Mangonui and set out for Whangaroa. Arriving there during the night the crew rested up before their job on Saturday. Saturday morning was a beautiful morning and the waka was readied for her passengers that were to board at 9.30am. The passengers were trustees from the new Marae Mangatowai. They were given a two hour cruise round the very scenic Whangaroa Harbour. After lunch, the waka set sail for Waitangi but due to deteriorating weather she returned to Mangonui at 11.00pm. Crew for this sail were: Captain Stanley Conrad, Tara Puke, James Eruera, Brian Wiki, Candice Reading, John Harding, Taohora Harawira, Huia Marshall, Turanga Barklay-Kerr and Te Wai Kapea.
