A Wealth of Maori Art in 2007
Toi Maori announces its Calendar of 2007 events
Mihimihi
Kia ora,
Toi Maori Aotearoa continues to promote its constituent national artform teams and the many outstanding Maori artists.
We are delighted that the national weavers' collective Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa, has had such enormous success and profile through the Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread exhibition's tour of the United States of America in 2005/2006. We look forward to its final showing in the Christchurch Art Gallery in early 2007.
Ta moko contemporary artists continue to enthrall audiences wherever their art is seen. Carving is highly regarded both in its traditional and modern forms. Dance and theatre productions are gaining recognition with a number of international tours currently in negotiation; whilst Maori music continues to have resonance and value and Maori authors are becoming increasingly prolific and admired. Contemporary visual art projects with other indigenous artists will again feature in 2007.
The ceremonial waka during the Maori Art Meets America project in San Francisco will be present on the world stage in 2007 in some exciting projects.
Underpinning all of these great artistic endeavours and traditions is the vital role of tikanga Maori that guides and directs all our activities and allows Toi Maori to be truly grounded in this wonderful land Aotearoa New Zealand.
~ Waana Morrell Davis, Chairperson and Garry Nicholas, General Manager, Toi Maori Aotearoa - Maori Arts New Zealand.
