Michael Parekowhai - One Day Sculpture
Michael Parekowhai brings his artwork 'Yes We Are' to Wellington as part of the One Day Sculpture event. The work will appear across multiple Wellington locations from 5am to 10pm on Thursday 28 May. Michael will discuss his approach to 'Yes We Are' on Friday evening, 29 May, from 5.30pm at Massey University, Wellington.
Katherine Mansfield short story competition
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Katherine Mansfield Fellowship, Association France Nouvelle -Zélande is organizing a short-story competition, for students under 30 years of age, enrolled in a French or New Zealand university or those holding a student visa. The chosen theme is The Antipodes. The first prize is a return ticket New Zealand- France. Deadline for submitting is June, 30th, 2009.
Kauwae 09
Kauwae, a national Maori women´s art collective is holding a series of multi-media exhibitions to celebrate Matariki (Maori New Year). Beginning with the first two exhibitions in Manukau, the selected works will then travel to the Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne and join artists from the East Coast region. Rangimarie - A selection of films
A selection of films including rare 1920s scenes from the Whanganui River and the East Coast. The footage includes shots of local Maori making hinaki (eel traps), as well as netting and catching fish, weaving, hand games and music making. There will also be a screening of Waiora - Rangimarie (1987) a short documentary on the life and work of expert weaver Rangimarie Hetet. Venue: Wellington Film Archive. Date: Saturday 23 May, 7pm.
Hinemoana Baker selected as Queensland's 2009 Poet-in-Residence
Acclaimed Maori poet, musician, producer and teacher of creative writing, Hinemoana Baker will be Queensland's 2009 Poet-in-Residence, based in Queensland from July to September this year.
Broken Barrier - NZ Feature night at the Film Archive
Tom Sullivan, a young Pakeha journalist researching a series of exploitative, tabloid articles on “the” Maori people becomes a casual labourer on a Mahia Peninsular farm. The emotional liaison he forms with Rawi, a young Maori woman exposes the racism engendered by the particular social attitudes and expectations of that time. Ta moko wananga in Auckland - 12 to 17 May 2009
Auckland moko bookings are now open for a ta moko wananga happening at Hoani Waititi Marae in Waitakere, Auckland, 12 - 17 May. There will be four moko artists working - Mark Kopua, Joni Brooking, Turumakina Duleyz and Tommy Clark.
