MAORI ART MARKet dates announced for October 2009

Featuring the best of contemporary Maori art at the new Te Rauparaha Arena and Pataka Museum, Porirua City.

MAORI ART MARKet 2009

MAORI ART MARKet promises to be bigger and better than both the San Francisco 'Maori Art Meets America' project in 2005, as well as ‘MAORI MARKet 2007’ in Wellington city.

Organisers have now confirmed the majority of artists and participating galleries for 2009, many of whom were involved in the 2007 Wellington event. An additional three galleries and two major museums have joined the showcase.

A highlight of this year's contemporary Maori art showcase will be the three international artists: sculptor Dempsey Bob (Canada), painter Dan Namingha (USA), and fashion designer Dorothy Grant (Canada). Another significant feature will be three leading Pacific Island artists and three New Zealand artists (names to be announced). The mixed, New Zealand-wide craft market on Saturday 10 October will be another important part of the programme.

The MAORI ART MARKet event is led by a unique partnership between Toi Maori Aotearoa and its national artists' collectives and Porirua city with its extensive arts and cultural profile. Organisers are working to ensure the event has a high profile and strong support events leading up to and during the festive period from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 October.
