MAORI MARKet Will Showcase World-Class Artwork
Artwork from world class contemporary Maori artists, who have been widely acclaimed in North America, will form the centrepiece for a new event in Wellington this month.
MAORI MARKet will feature work from the successful exhibitions Maori Art Meets America in San Francisco in 2005, Toi Maori-Eternal Thread and the highly successful Kiwa and Manawa exhibitions at the Spirit Wrestler Gallery in Vancouver in 2003 and 2006.
MAORI MARKet will be the largest assembly of contemporary Maori art from over 100 leading and emerging artists when it opens the doors for the first time at Wellington's TSB Bank Arena on Queens Wharf from April 27 to 29.
It will feature paintings, weaving, sculpture, wood, silver, bone, gold, and greenstone carving, clay, Ta Moko or traditional tattoo with items ranging in price from $500 to $80,000. It is being staged by Toi Maori, a charitable trust established by artists in 1996 for the promotion of contemporary Maori arts.
MAORI MARKet will also feature a fashion parade of contemporary woven fibre and feather shoulder garments, Maori Tourism ventures, Maori food and wine, dealer galleries, live displays of Ta Moko, clay artists, contemporary jewellers, weaving and story tellers.
Special guests include six leading Native American and Canadian artists have been in invited to exhibit their work. Visiting artists include Lillian Pitt a senior jeweller and sculptor of Portland, Oregon and Denise Wallace an Inuit jeweller now based in Hawaii.

Opens with a Gala Evening on 26 April, to be held at the TSB Bank Arena on the Wellington waterfront. The event will open to the public from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 April.

Will feature New Zealand's top galleries exhibiting Maori art as well as the five major Maori art schools; and work by contemporary art graduates.

Will make connections with leading North American Indigenous artists, including a showcase of the styles of Canadian fashion designer Dorothy Grant (Haida) in association with Maori weavers. Also featured are renowned artists Dempsey Bob (Tahltan/Tlingit sculptor), Lillian Pitt (Warm Springs mask maker/jeweller), Chuck Striplen (Ohlone weaver) and Denise Wallace (Aleut jeweller).
