Whakapikioranga workshops - Healing Through Song

Whakapikioranga workshops will take place daily as a component of the week-long Toi Maori Festival being held in Hastings from 10 , 15 January 2005.

A week-long series of workshops on Whakapikioranga - Healing through Song will be led by musicians Whirmako Black and Mere Taylor-Tuiloma. Presented by Puatatangi , national committee for Contemporary Maori Music, the workshops will focus on composition, arrangement and a music recording at the end of the week. No experience is necessary.

The workshops will take place 10am , 4pm daily, Monday 10 January to Friday 14 January at the Hawke's Bay Exhibition Centre in Hastings. Workshop costs are $10 per day; lunch will be provided. The workshops will culminate in a performance on Saturday 15th January.

The Toi Maori Festival is a rich and rewarding event that brings together culture, art and people. Since 1999, the Toi Maori Festival has been held every two years in a different region of New Zealand. In January 2005, the Toi Maori Festival will be held for the first time in Heretaunga (Hastings), Hawke's Bay. The festival will be based at the Hawke's Bay Exhibition Centre and Civic Square in Hastings.

Maori Writers at the Toi Maori Festival, Hastings

Te Ha , national collective of contemporary Maori writers is offering workshops and readings by well-known Maori writers as a component of the week-long Toi Maori Festival being held in Hastings from 10 , 15 January 2005.

Storytelling session Wednesday 12 January 1pm
Joe Harawira (Hamilton), Hera Taute (Lower Hutt) and other storytellers tell traditional and modern stories , for children and adults alike. At Hawkes Bay Exhibition Centre.

Maori Writers Recital Thursday 13 January 1pm
Patricia Grace (Plimmerton), James George (Auckland), and Hinemoana Baker (Paekakariki) read from their work. At Hawkes Bay Exhibition Centre.

Writers Workshops Friday 14 January 1pm
James George and Hinemoana Baker will lead workshops for writers to be held at Hastings Central Library. Workshop options: (a) Creative Writing (b) Performing Your Work , poetry and song. Prior registration essential. Workshop costs: $10.00 per person.
