A biennial event is to be held in Wellington in September of each even-numbered year (2004 / 2006 / 2008).

The 2004 National Hui will feature a programme of forums, workshops and reading performances.

This will be an opportunity for Maori writers across all genre to gather and network together, discuss current issues and common experiences and help to promote Maori writing on a national level. Te Ha also hopes to create an event that will parallel Huia's highly successful 'E Tuhi! Get Writing! Awards for Maori Writers' and 'Maori Writers Festival' that already take place in September on odd-numbered years.

Toi Maori Marketing Manager John Dow has been working with Wellington City Council staff to secure long-term funding for this hui. Funding from Te Waka Toi has already been secured.
