The Eternal Thread is the first major international touring exhibition to celebrate the changing art of Maori weaving.
'Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread' is a showcase of the very best in traditional and contemporary Maori weaving. Its American tour has taken it to San Francisco, California and Salem, Oregon during 2005 and to Seattle, Washington in February 2006.
The exhibition's fourth and final US venue, with a new selection of kakahu (cloaks), kete (woven baskets) and contemporary works will be at the Museum at Warm Springs, an enterprise of The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Maori weavers will accompany the exhibition to give talks and demonstrations of weaving and to meet with local weavers, artists and tribal elders.
The exhibition was developed by Porirua's Pataka Museum in partnership with Toi Maori Aotearoa and Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa.
"We are honoured to introduce the beautiful work of Maori weavers to Warm Springs. We expect that this exhibition will encourage members of the Warm Springs community to continue to practise their traditional arts and languages. We believe that the deeply held knowledge and artistry that the Maori weavers and demonstrators will bring will inspire the community and delight Museum visitors."
~Carol Leone, Executive Director, The Museum at Warm Springs.
This event receives major funding from Te Waka Toi, the Maori Arts Board of Creative New Zealand.
