August 5 - 14: Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Forum will host Toi Maori: Art from the Maori People of New Zealand, a world class collection of fine Maori cloaks, enhanced with live weaving demonstrations and kete displays along with photographic works plus live demonstrations of ta moko (Maori tattooing). The largest exhibition of contemporary Maori art from New Zealand in the Americas in over two decades, Toi Maori seeks to demonstrate the spiritual significance of Maori art and culture. August 7 at 2pm — Te Puia Kapa Haka: Traditional Dance of New Zealand in Union Square. Deeply rooted in Maori culture. Kapa haka is the Maori art of celebration or performance, telling stories through song, dance, expression and movement. The past two decades have seen a major renaissance in Maori culture, with people of all ages taking up kapa haka. Te Puia Kapa Haka perform as part of the 'Maori Art Meets America' festival and the 'Toi Maori: Art from the Maori People of New Zealand' exhibition at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, August 5 - 14. The August 7th performance is presented in association with MJM Management Group and the San Francisco Parks Trust as part of their ongoing free "Jewels in the Square" series.

Description of Event
Travelling to San Francisco will be a delegation of Maori artists, a waka, the 'Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread' exhibition of weaving as well as contemporary sculptural artworks. Ta moko artists will also be demonstrating within the main exhibition area.
The Arrival
August 4, San Francisco Aquatic Park
On this day, Toi Maori - The Eternal Thread arrives in San Francisco. The ceremonial waka (canoe) "Te Ika a Maui," will be welcomed by members of the Ohlone (First Nations people of San Francisco) and representatives of San Francisco's Mayor Newsom. The arrival of the waka will herald the start of an exciting, culturally and creatively enriching 10 days in the city.

August 4 - 14 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Mission Street, San Francisco
An experience that reflects the history and the evolution of the Maori people from the first ray of light that separates the earth and the sky, to the strands that weave us into the lives and cultures of the world.
A showcase of the best of Maori weaving, sculpture, ta moko (body
tattooing) ceramics and jewellery. Includes stunning artworks, artists at work on site and special presentations.
Toi Maori - The Eternal Thread exhibition
Toi Maori - The Eternal Thread is a showcase of the very best in traditional and contemporary Maori weaving from Aotearoa New Zealand.
This landmark exhibition premiered at the New Zealand International Arts Festival in February 2004 and will tour to select New Zealand venues during 2004 - 2005, as well as to the USA during 2004 - 2007. Exhibiting artists and weavers from Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa will accompany the exhibition to give talks and demonstrations of weaving at each venue.
The exhibition contains over 90 works, and was developed by Pataka Museum of Arts And Cultures, Porirua, New Zealand, in partnership with Toi Maori Aotearoa - Maori Arts New Zealand and Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aotearoa - the national collective of Maori weavers.
