Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread - Te Aho Mutunga Kore

Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread is the first major international touring exhibition to celebrate the changing art of Maori weaving, tracing how this art form has developed, reasserted and reinvented itself, from the finest traditional Maori cloaks (kakahu) and kete to the outstanding contemporary work of today.

Toi Maori: The Eternal Thread will be supported by a programme of weaving demonstrations and ta moko demonstrations.

Honouring Words

The Honouring Words 3rd International Indigenous Authors Celebration Tour brings together highly respected and acclaimed indigenous writers from Canada, Aotearoa and Australia to promote and celebrate the international development of Indigenous writing. Meet the writers in person, share in a presentation of excerpts from their writings and join in the discussion of the continuing importance of storytelling and writing as an integral part of indigenous society today.

Ta Moko: A history on skin

Te Uhi a Mataora are committed to the promotion of ta moko as a living, breathing and dynamic artform worn as a symbol of one's identity and origin. Observe some of New Zealand's finest artists demonstrating the art of ta moko and participate in seminars looking at the history and modern practice of the ancient art of skin tattooing and its role in redefining Maori identity.

As part of AK05, the Auckland Art Gallery is pleased to host a week long programme by Te Uhi a Mataora. A daily talk will take place at 1pm by taa moko artists with continual demonstrations throughout the day from 10am - 4pm.

'Strata' By Kirk Torrance

Following Taki Rua's hugely successful AK03 season of 'Awhi Tapu,' AK05 proudly presents 'Strata.' Set in the late 1800s on the rugged West Coast of the South Island, Strata is the story of brothers Angus and Mo and Angus' search 1000ft underground for the soul of the child he lost. Winner of the 2003 Chapman Tripp Theatre Award for Most Original Production, Outstanding New Playwright (Kirk Torrance) and Most Promising New Director (Tim Spite).
