“He Reo, He Mana, He Whakapapa”
Moko is a language, unique to the individual wearer that describes and illustrates their personal story; it is a way of life. As a Ta Moko artist, Daniel (Raniera) McGrath endeavors to reflect this in each and every one he does, creating a unique Moko through constant research to express the persons own kaupapa, their own unique story.
Tribal affiliation: Te Rarawa, Ngati Kuri, Ngati Hine, Nga Puhi.
Daniel (Raniera) McGrath hails from the north, from Tai Tokerau
"I always had an interest in things Maori, especially Ta Moko from a early age.”
He was first captivated by the many tupuna painted by Lindauer and Goldie, and like many artists today, constantly drew on and in everything, expressing his desire to learn and create.
Daniel has been lucky enough to have a strong whanau backing, and good mentors, always pushing and motivating him to learn and achieve excellence, while at the same time keeping him grounded.
While at Toihoukura, Daniel was also fortunate to be under the tutelage of Derek Lardelli, who has been a great influence on his Ta Moko career, regarding tikanga, hygiene, quality and professionalism in all aspects.”
Other then Ta Moko, he also enjoys Graphic designing, composing, researching history and whakapapa, as well as te reo Maori, and the beauty within the reo of Tai Tokerau. Another art form he enjoys doing also is carving, especially making taonga puoro, traditional Maori instruments.
