Te Ha

Contemporary Maori Writers

Te Ha

Te Ha

Te Ha was established in 1991 as a forum for contemporary Maori writers to promote excellence in writing and encouragement of new writers.

Committee members:
James George - Pouwhakahaere (Auckland)
Dr. Bridget Underhill (Rangiora)

Te Ha Literary Awards from 1991-1993 provided welcome support for writers. The Awards categories included Children's Stories, Drama, Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry.

Workshops in creative writing with indigenous writers from Canada, the USA, the Pacific Islands and Australia have been a feature. This continues a network of indigenous writers throughout the Pacific Rim. Academic studies of writing in English by indigenous peoples have resulted in works by Hone Tuwhare, Patricia Grace and Witi Ihimaera being studied world-wide.

In 2001, the touring programme 'On the Bus' was launched at Otaki travelling to Wanganui and Taranaki. The programme involved a team of published writers and storytellers visiting schools, marae, libraries and prisons.

'On the Bus' Contemporary Maori Writers tour is now an annual event for Te Ha, touring to Northland (2002), Canterbury (2003), and Taupo and Waiariki (2004).

Te Ha has also had key involvement in 'Honouring Words International Indigenous Authors Celebration Tour,' which brings together indigenous writers from Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
